Are You Still on Track in Your Business? A Quick Reset

Are you feeling overwhelmed in your business and not sure what to focus on next?

Maybe you’re wondering if you’re still on track.

Maybe the plan you put together at the beginning of the year seems really far away…. and you’re not sure if you’re making progress, or if it’s even still the right way to go.

Perhaps you set some big goals at the beginning of the year and now you’re wondering how you thought you’d get it all done… and if you’re feeling behind, what you can do to adjust.

That’s ok. This is all normal.

It’s easy to set big goals at the beginning of the year (and that’s a good thing!). But the year usually doesn’t go the way we expect.

That’s why it’s a smart move to pause and check in — whether you think of it as a mid-year marketing review, a business reset, or just a step back to gain perspective.

In fact, it’s important to not just do goal setting once a year. Checking in throughout the year to make sure you’re still on the right track and focusing on the right things is instrumental to your success.

In these moments, it’s ok to stay on the same path… or to switch gears entirely, if that’s what you want to do.

The key is to step back and look at it with an informed perspective.

The goal is to undermine your overwhelm… and help you feel more grounded and oriented around what you need to do next.

So here are five questions you can use anytime throughout the year to check in with your business and your marketing, get clear on what matters, and make sure you’re still on track:

1. What was your #1 big goal for this year?

Whether you’re working on a goal you set at the beginning of the year, or are carrying something over from last year — writing it out can remind you of what you were focusing on and why it matters to you.

2. Does it feel like that is still the right goal for you? If not, what is your new goal?

This is where a lot of people get stuck. They treat their goal like it’s written in stone. The thing is — the closer you get to your goal, the better you’ll understand what you’re really trying to do, and the more it can shift.

So it’s ok to modify it, or even change your goal altogether. This is one of the biggest reasons why you’re doing a check in and reset.

3. What have you done so far to move towards your goal — whether it’s your original #1 goal from the beginning of the year, or the new one you just crafted?

It’s easy to forget how much progress you’ve made. Even small things count, because they add up. All big goals are achieved this way — one small step at a time.

And if you truly haven’t made progress, that’s useful information. Instead of beating yourself up about it, get curious and ask: “Why?” Is it because you don’t actually want the goal? Or because the steps you’ve identified are too big? Or something else?

This is your opportunity to redefine the path to that goal… which is what we’ll do next.

4. What does the entire path look like to achieve that goal, starting from where you are now?

Start by defining the path in big steps. What stages or phases can you break it down into?

And then take the first few steps and break them down even further until you have a list that actually feels doable. If it feels overwhelming or you’re wondering how you’re supposed to do it, break it down even further.

There’s no “right answer” for how much you have to drill it down until it feels doable. That will be unique to you.

5. What are your next 3 steps?

One of the things that drives overwhelm is our perspective: We focus on the end of the path instead of the one step in front of us. It can be helpful and more motivating to focus on your very next step. And knowing what comes immediately after that helps you keep moving forward.

This check-in isn’t something you don once and never come back to.

You can return to it anytime things start to feel messy, unclear, or overwhelming.

In fact, it’s a great idea to set a reminder in your calendar to check in with your plan regularly — whether it’s weekly, monthly, quarterly… whatever works for you.

The intention here isn’t to get it perfect. Or even to achieve your goal in the exact way you imagine it.

It’s to keep you oriented, help you keep moving forward in a way that works for you… and re-focus every time you need to.
